Does Riba Not Apply to Paper Money?

Salam Reader,

Here's what we're serving this week:

  • πŸ₯— Starter: A 50-year-long conversation
  • πŸ” Main Course: A short article on fiat currency dodging the prohibitions of riba
  • 🍰 Dessert: Umar ibn al-Khattab on money

Starter πŸ₯—

Main Course πŸ”

Do dollars dodge the prohibition of riba?

Muslim jurists started wrestling with that question in the 19th century.

In an academic paper published last year, Sh. Yousef Wahb unpacks the entire debate.

It’s rich with historical colour and definitely worth the read, but it’s also highly technical.

Whenever I finish a technical paper, I ask myself, "how would I explain this to a high school student?"

This short article is the result.

Dessert 🍰

People, take good care of the wealth God has granted you; a little managed gently is better than a lot squandered wastefully.

Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) - cited 'Islah al Mal' of Ibn Abi al-Dunya

Stay away from riba. Both true, both important. But we rarely get into the how. How do we find financial clarity as Muslims? How do we...
