Muslim jurists started wrestling with that question in the 19th century.

In an academic paper published last year, Sh. Yousef Wahb unpacks the entire debate.

It’s rich with historical colour and definitely worth the read, but it’s also highly technical.

Whenever I finish a technical paper, I ask myself, "how would I explain this to a high school student?"

This short article is the result.
